Their arrival at the open-air stage revealed a breathtaking valley beyond the wooden seats. The afternoon job looked simple: fix the loose metal bracket that holds a canvas roof panel. At once two forces struck. An intense sun turned every bolt too hot to touch, while a dry wind swept grit across the floorboards and into Nico’s eyes. He blinked hard, stepped back, and scanned the wings for help. A wide plywood sheet, once painted with a smiling actor for last season’s play, leaned against a crate. He dragged the sheet forward and raised it like a door between the wind and Lea.

The board dulled the flying grit, though the sun still glared above it. Lea braced one knee on the rail, swung a small hammer found in a toolbox, and tapped the bracket into place. Each gust bent the plywood, cracking the old paint and sending bright chips onto fresh varnish nearby. One larger flake landed in the wet coating and left a pale scar the shape of a leaf. Lea paused, listened to the wind soften, and lowered the hammer. The bracket stood half-firm against the post. Paint flakes clung to the silent board near their shoes.
