Gwen pushed the narrow backstage door, and its hinge bounced the panel back toward her hip. Dust flicked from the curtain as she stepped onto the dim floorboards. A wooden plank, left on two paint tins, slanted like a short ramp beside a crate of forgotten props. Light slipped through a cracked window and caught fine sawdust that shimmered against the rough grain of the plank. On the ramp waited a small metal anchor from last season’s sea play. She nudged it forward with one finger. The anchor slid, gained momentum, then toppled sideways before reaching the bottom. Gwen let out a quiet laugh and reached into the crate again.

She placed a tin toy chair on the ramp, this time starting from a higher spot. The chair rolled on its back legs, spun once, and stopped exactly where the anchor had fallen. Dust stripes now marked two separate paths. Curious, Gwen lifted a cardboard model of a retirement home, its tiny windows painted silver, and set it at the very top. She tapped the rear wall gently. The model glided, picked up speed, but hit a hidden ridge, jumped, and landed upright next to the chair. The ridge, probably added for safety, showed the quiet wisdom of stage carpenters. Layers of chipped paint along the plank told a silent legacy of earlier experiments, yet each scratch looked fresh under shifting light. Gwen traced the three tracks with her finger, then tried pushing the anchor again from a steeper angle. It skidded, turned, and froze halfway down. A small piece of sawdust drifted across the ramp, brushing against the stalled metal point.
