English 原文
"The ruler lies crooked."
Tara straightened it against the workbench edge. She and Kent pressed two thin cedar slats together. They aimed to glue a curved brace for their toy cart. A thick elastic cord ran from a clamp to a peg, pulling the slats into an arch. The cord vibrated under stretch; each bounce showered tiny wood shavings across the bench. Afternoon light slid through the high window, catching dust. The same beam touched the dull green lawn beyond the terrace door. A half-finished lunch plate still held a single vegetable slice near the paintbrush jar, forgotten when work resumed.
Kent leaned closer to add glue precisely along the pencil mark. At that moment the cord slipped and snapped upward while the compressed slats tried to rebound sideways. The two forces met at the same instant. The cord whipped splinters toward his face, and the slats flexed outward. He jerked back and spotted a spare plywood stencil beside the glue pot. He yanked it up like a solid panel. The stiff sheet blocked the whipping cord, yet the edge struck the escaping slats. Under the impact the stencil cracked, a thin split racing from one corner to the other. Behind the weakening shield, Tara pinched the loose nut and threaded it tighter. The slats quieted, yet the cord kept humming.
While Tara steadied the frame, Kent grabbed a scrap dowel. He began to chop a shallow notch so the cord’s hook could bite deeper. The sawdust curled, springy and warm, but the damaged stencil sagged farther, its split widening with every vibration. Kent wedged the cord into the new notch; the rebound eased, yet the brace still rose a fraction. The cracked stencil slid down and left a pale scrape across the workbench surface. Glue pooled beside the mark, and the curved brace hung stubbornly above it.
