A sharp fishy smell from open pet food drifted across the bench. Thin varnish mixed with it and formed a strange, salty-sweet cloud inside the cramped workshop. On the main table waited a wooden crane model; its boom leaned forward while a coiled steel spring inside the arm tried to pull it back. A broad rubber band, stretched between wheels at the base, dragged the hook the other way. Nearby lay a half-eaten biscuit—her forgotten quick snack—beside a flyer once packed around sauce from a quick snack kitchen. A sticky square of chocolate, dusted in sawdust, looked like a future yummy treat. Sawhorses carried boards that had begun to sag after last week’s rain, and an unused pad of foam showed dents from earlier clamps.

Dina braced one knee, then pinched the foam pad and shoved it between the spring and the wooden arm. The pad flexed, absorbing the first rebound as the spring jerked forward, and a muffled thud followed. With that force held, she twisted the boom upward and eased tension from the rubber band; the stretched loop slackened little by little. The crane frame stopped rocking, yet the foam already showed a long crease, and its edge started to crumble. She folded the softened pad again, pushing until it compressed like bread dough, but the crease split wider, scattering pale crumbs across the vise. The boom kept a slow trembling arc over the vise. Light glimmered along the jagged tear in the foam pad.
