Four arm-lengths from the pier’s edge, two crates stood side by side under a green tarpaulin. Miles leaned over them, while Cora balanced on the gangplank between hull and shore. Warm afternoon light glimmered across the varnished planks and the calm channel beyond. They waited with a slim brass telescope wrapped in cloth. Cora planned to explore the night sky after the boat finished loading. A thick elastic cord stretched over the tarpaulin, keeping the stack tight against small waves. The cord hummed each time the hull rose. Thin rope tails twitched against a cleat and danced across the sunlit deck in scattered loops. Miles pinched the cord near the knot, tested the tension, then eased it slowly.

When the cord sprang free, the tarpaulin rebounded and slapped one crate. The crate nudged the second, and together they coasted toward the gangplank. Their combined push tilted the narrow board; the far end dropped and bumped a barrel of fish bait. The barrel rolled, struck a coil of line, and the line unraveled like a loose spring. The spinning coil snagged a bucket holding three lively catfish, tipping it toward the water. Miles lunged and hooked the bucket handle with a stray boathook, but the coil kept sliding. Cora wedged a short plank beneath the barrel, halting the roll before more cargo shifted. Water splashed against the piling; the bucket steadied beside Miles’ boots, and the telescope stayed dry. Harbor water crept over the pier's lowest boards. A small wave hid the fresh scrape under shifting ripples.
