English 原文

A sharp twang cut through the midday chatter of the market. Bea paused beside a wooden stand where melon slices steamed under the sun, and Patch, her spotted dog, sniffed the ground. The stall line curled along the main street of the village, bright awnings held up by cords drawn tight between bamboo poles. Bea wanted to explore the shaded tables and collect cheese, figs, and bread for a riverside picnic after lunch. She folded her canvas bag and stepped closer to a crate of olives. Patch quested under the stand, nose pushing aside straw. A sagging rope brushed his back; its stretch kept a sample tray balanced above a basket of tomatoes. When Patch leaned away, his collar snagged the rope, pulling it farther. The cord groaned, sprang free of a knot, and the tray pivoted toward the edge.

The falling tray struck a hanging banner, which bounced like a drumhead and slammed against a neighboring pole. That pole flexed forward; its top hook slid loose, and the whole awning sagged, pressing on a stack of fruit cartons. Apples rolled, wedged between cart wheels, and a small wheelbarrow began to angle downhill. Bea darted after it, pinched the wheelbarrow’s rubber handle, and hooked the loose cord around the thicker axle. The tension rebounded, pulling the awning back into shape and stopping the cascade. Apples rattled inside the cartons but stayed put. Warm spice drifted from a nearby tea pot, mixing with the dusty scent of canvas. Bea released the handle and tucked a stray apple into the wheelbarrow. Patch trotted away, ears pricked toward a clinking fountain, and Bea watched sunlight flicker across the moving water.
