Warm metal ridges along a watering can brushed the squirrel’s ribs as it squeezed behind the spout. The animal sniffed the damp soil in a raised bed. Then it scratched a shallow scrape between two hopeful sprouts. Steam curled gently from the dark surface because midday sun beat on the bed’s wooden frame. Nearby, a human trowel lay forgotten. Its handle cooled in the shade, and its blade was already hot enough to shimmer. Above the bed, a thin vine climbed a trellis in quiet partnership with a bamboo stake. The weight of each leaf bowed the support bars. Under the boards, sensitive roots spread, careful to avoid the heated planks. Farther away, bees hummed among marigold blooms, and a faint citrus scent hung over the mulch.

While the squirrel scooped another pawful of crumbly earth, its bushy tail brushed the watering can. The push was harder than before. The tilt released warm water that slid down the spout and struck the hot trowel blade. A burst of sharper steam rose, condensed on the trellis bar, and gathered into drops. Those drops travelled along the wood in gradual pulses, then fell onto the squirrel’s back. The sudden splash made the creature spring against the vine. The vine shook, scattering tiny leaves onto the soil, where moisture cooled the surface and loosened it further. The squirrel’s digging deepened with fresh ease, and cooler grains rolled away from the roots. Empathy existed only in the gentle balance: heat lifted, water cooled, claws paused, and growth continued. It pressed the soil flat with one quick push. Behind it, a single drop still slid from the warm spout as the squirrel bounded over the fence.

當松鼠再挖一爪酥鬆土壤時，牠蓬鬆的尾巴碰到了澆水壺，這次推得更重。傾斜的壺口流出暖水，沿著噴嘴滑下，擊中滾燙的鏟片。更銳的蒸氣沖起，凝在棚架木條上，聚成水滴。那些水滴以漸進的脈動沿木頭前移，然後落到松鼠背上。突如其來的濺水讓牠彈向藤蔓。藤蔓晃動，細葉撒落在土面，水分再次降溫並使土壤更鬆。松鼠的挖掘變得更輕快，較涼的土粒從根旁滑開。這份動作裡僅存的共感是平衡：熱氣上升，水滴降溫，爪子暫停，生長持續。牠快速把土面拍平。牠離開時，溫熱噴嘴還滑下一滴水珠，越過籬笆的尾巴輕輕晃動。
