Today she placed a tall glass tube on the work table beside a quiet household fan. A faded paper collar glued to the tube already showed tiny tears where many drafts had tugged. Nora squeezed once; warm air shot from the bellows and tried to inflate the swirling column. A playful gust poured through the open pane, crossed the table, and collapsed the forming vortex. She tightened her grip and twisted the bellows downward to motivate the sluggish air with sharper pumps. The dust lifted again, climbing the tube in a neat, whistling ribbon. At that moment, the outside wind shifted, sending a colder draft that fluttered loose notes across the table. One paper slid into the tube, broke the ribbon, and dust burst into a tiny tornado. She lifted the tube, tilting it toward the fan to assist the collar and force steadier rise. The gesture steadied the rim, yet the inner swirl still cracked apart and fell. Chalk specks drifted over the glass lip and dotted her sleeve, quiet proof of the swirling fight. The tube stayed upright, stripes of color smeared along its inner wall.
