The Crescent That Carried Sweet Varnish-

English 原文
Joel slid between two bookshelf aisles, his heel brushing a half-moon stain that glistened on the carpet. A syrup-rich aroma, like overripe peach mixed with varnish, drifted up from the damp mark and clung to the dust-laden air conditioning breeze.
Flora arrived from the reading table, carrying a canvas basket that still breathed nutmeg and old straw. The stain looked shallow, yet the sugary smell thickened, covering the usual papery musk of stacked volumes. They knelt, noses almost touching the floor, and noticed that the crescent grew darker toward the return cart area. A copy of “Birds at Dawn,” its jacket painted with an iridescent sky, leaned against the cart wheel and oozed the same sweet trace. Flora set the basket down; woven reeds squeaked as vapor from the stain rose and mixed with the grassy scent of the reeds. She had tucked a child-size brass telescope beside the basket earlier, and its leather wrap already carried a pepper-sharp oil. Joel lifted the telescope, turned the lens toward a ceiling lamp, and the glass magnified the stain’s shimmer from a different perspective; under the bright circle, flecks of pale gold glimmered like sugar crystals.
They followed the growing odor toward the checkout counter, where the book jacket had been pressed against a loose cork seal hidden beneath the spine. The cork finally slipped, and a bead of viscous liquid rolled onto Joel’s fingertip, releasing a blast of caramel and pine. He tilted the book; instead of water damage, a tiny wooden lark lay inside a hollowed section, its feathers painted with the same resin that now perfumed the aisle. The surprise shifted: the damp mark was not spilled juice but leaking craft varnish once meant to keep the secret bird shiny. Light clicked off in distant rows; closing time had approached while they traced smells, yet the puzzle now felt complete.
At the reading table nearby, another damp crescent pooled beneath an atlas spine.
