English 原文
Two workbenches stood an arm-length apart, with a narrow channel of floor between them. Wade, a visiting biologist, placed a small wooden wheel on the left bench. He had carved the wheel to model how birds orient while they migrate across wide water. Miniature blocks, shaped to show wetland habitat, lay scattered beside it. A small green fly lifted from a glue pot and drifted under the window. Light from outside reached the rim, and a mild breeze slid through the open pane. The current touched the spokes, and the wheel began to twirl. Its teeth meshed with a loose cog; the cog pivoted, nudged a cork reel, and started a soft spiral of motion across the bench. Pine scent mixed with faint varnish fumes, and afternoon light painted pale stripes across the floor.
The reel rolled toward the aisle and tipped over the edge. As it fell, a thin cord unwound and snagged a row of paintbrushes. Each brush swung like a tiny pendulum, and one handle struck a hanging pulley above the second bench. The pulley jerked, turning a larger gear below; a stacked tray of clay tiles began to vibrate. Wade lunged forward, wedged his palm against the big gear, and halted its rotation. The tiles steadied, but the cord still reeled out, pulling the first wheel faster. He grabbed the free end, looped it around a wooden peg, and tugged twice. The sudden tension reversed the spin, and the whole chain slowed until every part stopped. Dust motes continued to orbit the quiet wheel. He coiled the loose cord neatly and set the wheel beside the brushes. A faint tap from one swinging brush kept the air in motion.
