Dry paper rustled under the round window beside the stairs. A thin whistle slipped through the glass joints with each rising gust. A young gull hopped across the sill, wings half open, eyes bright on every flutter. It pecked at a crumb of cake left inside a crumpled bag. The peck pushed air into the bag; the bag ballooned then fell with a soft puff. That sudden breath stirred a pinwheel toy lying nearby, and its blades began to turn. Salt spray mixed with warm tar, hanging in the quiet corners of the room.

Sunshine slanted through the opening lens, warming the air already moving around the table. In that warmth the gull flapped once, very hard, and the spinning pinwheel skated forward. It bumped the bag again; trapped air burst out and chased dried petals across the floor. Some petals lifted high, fluttered past the rail, and drifted up the spiral steps. A rising draft met them on the way, carrying each bright fleck toward the lamp room. The gull hopped after the petals, beating its wings; every beat sent another puff along the stairwell.

Near the lamp room doorway, a second gull landed carefully beside the first, claws scraping stone. Both birds flapped together, and the combined draft rocked a row of hanging paper kites. The kites swung out, struck the turning pinwheel below, and the whole column of air thickened. Petals, crumbs, and tiny feathers whirled upward, dancing inside the great glass lens. When the gust faded, two pale feathers stuck to a smear of sweet icing on the warm stone sill. Sunlit air kept quivering around them while the birds coasted downward again.

階段わきの丸い窓の下で、乾いた紙がカサカサと鳴った。ガラスの合わせ目から細い笛のような音が風に乗ってすり抜けた。半分だけ翼を開いた若いカモメが、しきりに羽ばたきながら窓辺を跳ね回った。くしゃくしゃの袋に残ったケーキの欠片をついばむと、袋の中に空気が押し込まれ、ふわりとふくらんで軽い音を立てて落ちた。その息吹が近くに置かれた風車のおもちゃを揺らし、羽根が回り始めた。潮の香りと温かいタールの匂いが、部屋の静かな隅に重なって漂った。

開かれたレンズから差す日差しが、すでに動き始めた空気をさらに温めた。その暖かさの中でカモメが力いっぱい羽ばたくと、回る風車は前へ滑った。再び袋にぶつかり、閉じ込められた空気が飛び出して、乾いた花びらを床いっぱいに追い立てた。花びらはいくつも高く持ち上がり、手すりを越えてらせん階段を舞い上がった。途中で上昇気流に出会い、一片一片が灯火室へ運ばれた。カモメは花びらを追って跳ね上がり、羽ばたきのたびに新しい息を階段へ送り込んだ。

灯火室の入口近くで、二羽目のカモメがそっと降り立ち、石床を爪で擦った。二羽が同時に羽ばたき、合わさった風が紙の小さな凧の列を揺らした。凧は前へ振れ、下で回る風車をたたき、空気の柱はさらに太った。花びら、パンくず、細い羽毛が混ざり合い、大きなガラスレンズの中で渦を巻いた。突風が止むと、二枚の淡い羽が温かい石の窓枠に残った甘いクリームに貼り付いた。光の揺れる空気がその周りを震わせる中、二羽は再び下方へ滑空していった。
