The worktable felt gritty under Sam’s palms, and fine sawdust clung to his sleeves. Lily placed an ancient oak frame between them; its back held a shallow groove that once protected a beautiful picture, now long missing. They hoped to refill the groove with two bright lines—salt tinted blue for Lily, ground rice stained red for Sam—so the frame could hang again as a delightful border for new art. Sam folded a scrap of thin card into a funnel, propped it over the groove, and tipped his colored rice. The bigger grains jammed, yet lighter grains kept trickling, piling over the edge like a tiny avalanche. Each fresh heap scattered chalk dust that drifted onto Lily’s neat salt mound.

She braced the frame with one elbow, pinched the card, and widened the funnel’s neck. The jam loosened; rice poured fast, pushed the salt aside, and left a crooked stripe. Lily steadied her part, then scooped spilled grains with a dry brush and tucked them back. Together they tilted the frame, letting gravity even the two materials, but a hidden knot in the wood cracked and released a shower of pale crumbs. Sam nudged the frame flat; Lily pressed along the groove, and the twin lines finally held. A stray breeze slipped through the open door, lifting a sprinkle of mixed colors against the light—an unforgettable shimmer before it fell.

Sam wiped his fingertips on his apron. Two narrow stripes of mixed grains—one poured by him, the other by Lily—stretched across the backing board while loose sawdust kept swirling under the open door.
