English 原文
Ella flicked a metal washer across the sunlit roof tiles. It spun like a tiny wheel until friction slowed it beside the low equipment shelf.
Heat shimmer rose from the dark tar patches, and distant traffic hummed below. Owen stooped and lifted the washer. Other loose parts lay near a roof vent whose silver cowl turned steadily in the breeze. Beside the vent lay a small plastic archaeologist figure and a hinged brass locket. A flat spiral fossil, the color of sand, sat next to them. Without speaking, the pair arranged the objects on the shelf edge. Owen carefully propped the fossil in an upright stance. Ella balanced the washer against it so the rim could pivot. A chalk circle already marked the concrete; faint smears offered evidence of earlier experiments. Ella tapped the washer again with her finger. It rolled downward, struck the fossil, and nudged the locket open. The sudden swing of the locket’s lid threw the plastic archaeologist forward. The small figure tumbled off the wooden shelf.
With quick hands, Owen wound an elastic band around the washer to add torque. He placed the loaded coil above the chalk circle and eased his finger away. The washer spun faster, hissed across the concrete, and bumped the fallen figure. The archaeologist’s small hat slipped free, slid under the still-turning roof vent, and lodged between two rotating fins. The cowl slowed, then pushed the hat outward again. It whirled back across the roof and tapped the fossil, which now lay flat. That sharp jolt suddenly tipped the open locket. Its lid folded shut over the hat and stayed closed, a new weight shifting the fossil slightly sideways. Thin dust rose where stone met concrete, leaving fresh evidence of motion. Ella lifted the locket from the path and slipped the elastic off the washer. Owen spun the washer once more beside the chalk line. Its bright circle kept whirring across the roof while they walked to the doorway.
