One disc slid until a draft from the open window nudged it against a mesh frame—leftover parts from an old safety net system stored beside the microscope. The mesh tilted, and loose daisy petals that had dried overnight scattered across the glass trays. Yellow specks fluttered like tiny sails, then sank onto a rubber mat that already showed fine dust from earlier tries. Seth leaned closer; he brushed nothing, letting the air take charge.

Wren squeezed the bellows again, harder. The fresh gust caught the fallen petals, but now the cork discs blocked their path. Petals struck the discs and bounced upward, landing inside a shallow crate that sat under the shelf. Air trapped inside the crate could not escape quickly, so each landing petal pressed new air out through a knot hole, and that thin whistle spun a paper pinwheel on the crate lid. Wren tried to understand how the drafts crossed the table; he shifted the bellows sideways and released another pulse. This time, the pinwheel flung a cork disc back toward the mesh frame. The disc knocked loose a corner of the real safety net that hung for insect specimens, yet the net only sagged and caught nothing new. Petal dust now coated the mesh and the bellows handle, but the crate lid still rocked from the escaping air. Wren steadied the bellows for another squeeze. The pinwheel kept turning in uneven jolts.
