Warm steam from a nearby pot drifted across her arm, and the smell of cinnamon hovered above the stove. Laughter drifted from the hallway, mixed with a muffled chuckle from the television beyond. A shallow notch along the lip of the cup caught a few stubborn rice pieces, so she gave the cup a gentle shake and watched them join the pile. This time the salt poured first, the rice followed, and the flour floated last, layering the slope like snow. She wiped the counter with the side of her hand. Loose grains kept sliding around her fingers as she rinsed them under the tap.
