The mesh pocket on the back of the seat showed a pale rectangle of lint where Suki’s ticket pouch normally rested. She crouched, sliding a hand under her backpack and along the cool steel floor, hoping to feel the smooth plastic edge.

While she searched, the train doors thumped closed and the cabin eased away from the platform. A distant refinery emerged through the window, its blue-grey pipes sharp against the morning sky. Suki had packed her lunch before dawn; a loose bread crust now escaped from a torn napkin beside her bottle. As she knelt, the bottle rolled, its cap half-turned from earlier use. Water seeped out, gathered speed along a shallow groove, and stretched forward like a silver ribbon. It reached the crust, lifted it, and carried it toward the end of the carriage. The crust drifted until the ribbon touched the motion sensor at the sliding vestibule door. With a heavy sweep, the door shuddered shut, surprising the two passengers waiting to cross between cars.

Suki scrambled after the stream. Her fingers kneaded the soft canvas of the pouch she finally spotted wedged under the seat in front. One tug freed it, but the water still advanced. She tore the napkin, pressed wads of paper against the groove, and the ribbon broke into slow beads. An attendant appeared from the next car; before he could step, the half-closed door detected the reduced flow and hummed open again. Outside the window, a small riverside bistro flickered past, its awning blurred by the train’s speed. The napkin pulsed as each bead sank in, and the last droplet slid toward the drain near her shoes.
