"Slide the bottle nearer."

Hazel bent her knees and nudged the plastic bottle across the damp platform tile. Morning vibration from an idling train shook her calves while Cruz crouched at the lone metal faucet beside the ticket gate. Their goal was plain: catch enough water before the next southbound service rolled in. Thin steam drifted from cups in a gathering of commuters behind them, and shoulders brushed their backpacks each time the crowd swayed. Cruz wrapped both palms around the stiff handle. Tendons stood out along his forearms as he pulled. Nothing shifted. He tried again, twisting harder until his wrist tendons burned. A brief stillness followed, broken only by engine hum and the echo of distant announcements.

He exhaled, reached into his pocket, and produced a flat house key. Using it as a wedge, he jammed it under the handle. The metal scraped, but the handle refused to budge. Hazel leaned her weight forward; her heels lifted and her spine compressed while she pressed down with both hands. The joint finally loosened. A muddy trickle shot out, splashing her sleeve. She jerked back, nearly losing balance as water pattered over the rim of the plastic bottle. The flow stopped almost at once, leaving less than half a container filled. She and Cruz exchanged a quick nod—a silent truce after the strain of shared effort—then checked the digital clock above the gate. Three minutes remained.

A whistle rolled along the footbridge overhead, urging everyone toward the edge of the platform. Hazel capped the half-full bottle, shoulder muscles tight from the sudden cold. They jogged toward the second carriage; leg muscles pumped while straps slapped against their sides. Behind them, the loosened handle sagged again and thin water resumed its uneven drip, tapping the concrete in the space they had just left.

天橋上傳來汽笛聲，催促人潮朝月台邊緣移動。海索旋緊半滿的瓶蓋，肩膀因冷水抽緊。他們朝第二節車廂小跑，腿部肌肉一收一放，背包帶拍打身側。他們剛離開的位置上，鬆動的把手再次下垂，細細的水珠繼續斷續滴落，敲打在混凝土地面。
