English 原文
"Soap first, then shirts," Tess whispered.
She balanced a wide plastic bucket on her hip and eased the laundry-room door open with her shoulder. Sour steam from a just-finished wash wrapped around her nose, threaded with lavender bleach and a faint fishy note that reminded her of a tidepool at low sun. Pepper, the striped apartment cat, padded in behind her, his whiskers twitching at every drifting scent. Tess had carried the clothes down three flights already, past the low concrete vault of the stairwell where rusty water pipes exhaled a metallic tang. The single washing machine rumbled on, still half full; its lid had been jammed by a swollen towel left by someone else. From the balcony window, a rhythmic knock—hard, hollow—echoed like a woodpecker working bark outside, adding another layer to the air’s busy chorus. She tipped open the detergent box, its sugary powder stinging her throat, then sighed when the drum kept spinning.
The spare mop had been propped against the wall, so she nudged it aside and crossed the corridor to a service tap. Only a thin, yeasty trickle fell into her bucket. She twisted the handle again; the pressure coughed, sprayed, then halted. Pepper brushed her ankle. As an offering to keep him still, she flicked a few kernels of kibble onto a dry patch of tile. A minute later the machine finally clunked quiet, yet the tap burst alive without warning, flinging chlorine-sharp water over the rim. Tess grabbed a wooden broom—her improvised lever—and forced the valve half shut; spray thinned to a steady pour that quickly cooled her fingers. With the bucket now brimming, she dragged it back, heaved the shirts inside the freed drum, and started a fresh cycle. She turned toward the stairwell, damp cuffs sticking to her wrists. Behind her, the drum kept humming while suds drifted against the glass.
