A tour group drifted between her and the case, their phones glowing silver under the dim panels overhead. Rosa lingered in the moment, tracing the bridge with her eyes each time a gap opened, yet every new step placed another shoulder before her pencil. The polished floor, worn pale by thousands of shoes, mirrored ceiling shadows and offered no fixed spot to wait.

She angled toward a quieter corridor where a low bench promised rest. Cushions there existed to pamper tired visitors, yet the seat wheeled slightly when she touched it, revealing two marble spheres lodged beneath. One sphere rolled free, nudged a brass stand that supported a row of translucent wellness pots, and the jolt tipped the nearest pot against the next. Glass tapped glass; the second pot struck a slim metal rod that had been mounted by conservators to steady a blue-grey information paddle. The paddle swung, caught the cool breeze from an air vent, and carried its own momentum toward a stack of catalogues balanced on a narrow plinth. Pages fluttered, the stack toppled, and several catalogues skidded across the floor toward the main hall.

Rosa bent, pressed her shoe against the leading catalogue, and steered the spill away from the bridge display. The motion slowed, but a final booklet glided past her sole, heading for a security rope. A visiting child stepped forward, and his backpack absorbed the booklet’s push; the rope stayed steady, ending the cascade. Satisfied with the accidental stop-loss, Rosa moved closer to the case and lifted her sketchbook. Through the thick glass roof above, clouds framed a muted outlook of the city skyline while her pencil traced the cedar joints. Behind her, one marble sphere kept circling a shallow depression beside the bench, drawing tight silver arcs beyond her notice.
