Dean pushed the timber door inward, and a band of warmth slipped around his ankles before it rose to his shoulders. He stepped past the threshold, leather soles brushing fine charcoal dust, while Lily drifted in behind him. Nearer to the forge, orange glare licked the dim rafters, and the anvil stood quiet on its stump, its face gleaming like frozen moonlight. A quench bucket waited nearby, a single gallon of water trembling from every bellows breath. Outside, rain had softened the yard; wet earth clung to his boots, turning each footfall into a quiet quagmire that smudged the stone floor.

Hardly had the hammer touched the glowing bar when a dull note answered, lower than yesterday’s clear chime. Tongs clamped, Lily turned the metal, and the bar cooled faster than expected; gray crept over orange before Dean raised his second strike. Steam rising, he leaned back, noticing tiny black specks settling over the steel as though the air scattered them for sustenance. A line of scale flaked away, exposing a narrow precipice along the edge—so thin it caught light yet cast shadow. He set the hammer down, flexed his fingers, and consulted the bucket; ripples betrayed how little water remained for quenching.

What puzzled him was the fine fissure running the length of the piece, a flaw impossible to ignore after those accumulating hints of trouble. He reached for a chisel, hesitated, and instead lifted a wedge cleaner than the rest, its sides still cool. As though the floor were glass, he balanced his weight and slid the wedge beneath the bar, hoping to reopen the heated gap before the metal locked. The attempt shifted the crack but revealed another surprise: within the bar, darker metal shimmered, different from the iron they had ordered—scrap folded long ago into this rod, perhaps once part of farm tools that carried the village’s cultural heritage.

No sooner had that hidden layer flashed than the heat fled entirely, and the bar stiffened. Lily’s shoulders lowered; Dean rolled the wedge between his palms, neither speaking. Beyond the doorway, evening wind slipped inside, touching the same dust he had stirred on entry. He rested the flawed bar on the anvil again, its surface now cooler than his breath, and the threshold behind him flickered with forge light that pulsed, then steadied.

那層隱藏金屬閃現即逝，熱度也隨之散盡，鐵條硬鎖。莉莉肩線微沉；迪恩把楔子在掌中滾動，無語。門外暮風溜入，撫過他先前踏動的灰塵。缺陷鐵條再度躺回鐵砧，表面涼過吐息，身後的門檻映著鍛爐光，忽明忽暗，終於歸於平穩。
