Chains on the nearby swings rattled in quick bursts before the breeze dropped away. Amber sunlight brushed the slide’s metal sheet, turning it hot enough to shimmer, while paint in jubilant colors ran along the guard-rails like stripes on a ribbon. Nell and Reed waited with a small plastic bucket between them. Inside, clear water swayed around floating white anemone petals they had gathered from blooming plants just outside the low fence. Their plan held two parts: cool the slide so bare legs would not sting, then carry the still-damp petals to the sandbox for a make-believe soup. Reed had already tested the ladder; his palm lifted quickly from the warm rung.

When the last child at the top waved and began the descent, Nell raised the bucket. She tipped a slow arc, sending a narrow stream across the upper half of the metal. Steam rose and the surface dulled; cooling had started. At that moment, a sandy-pawed spaniel zig-zagged beneath the slide and nudged the bucket’s base with its nose. The bucket jerked, water sloshed forward, and most of the shimmering petals raced downhill ahead of the dog’s wagging tail. The slide hissed and turned comfortable to the touch—goal achieved—yet the sandbox ingredient had thinned to a damp ring clinging near the rim. A cloth band rested on the spaniel’s neck, showing where a veterinarian had trimmed fur earlier in the week.

Reed glanced at the bucket, then at the sandbox across the rubber tiles. He crouched, scooped the few remaining petals with a cupped hand, and pressed them against the inside wall of the bucket, saving what he could. Nell adjusted their timing instead of starting another wait; she signaled Reed to slide first while she carried the half-filled bucket toward the sand. As Reed launched down the newly cooled track, the spaniel trotted after him. Behind them, a thin thread of water crept under the rubber mat and left a darker stripe beside a single petal they never saw.
