English 原文
A wet crescent marked the rim of the water basin where the wooden ladle normally floated, yet the surface lay still. Lyra leaned over the grey-brown water, fingertips dipping through the cool film in search of the scoop. Behind her, Kent pressed his heel against the foot pedal, the wheel center spinning just enough to keep his clay block damp. A tabby cat perched on the drying rack, tail tucked close, observing the small chaos with wide eyes. Both potters needed a quick rinse before shaping: Lyra planned a narrow vase, while Kent aimed for a wide bowl. Without the ladle, each paused, glancing at the opaque basin and then at the single sponge already caked with slip.
Kent’s palm flattened the clay mound, yet the base began sliding because water had not been brushed underneath for grip. The wobble rattled through the stool into Lyra’s knees, spreading minor havoc across the workstation. The cat flinched and a row of cups shivered on the rack. Lyra spotted the missing tool at last. It had sunk, handle first, like a tiny log in a glen-shaped hollow at the basin’s center. She fished it out, water streaming down her forearm, and passed it across the narrow gap. The ladle was being dipped by Kent, then returned to Lyra in a silent rhythm. One scoop cooled his base; one splash slicked her rising walls. Outside, an interlude of drizzle tapped against the open window frame.
A quiet interlude followed, broken only by the wheel’s low hum and the cat’s whiskers twitching at each drip. Lyra had already coaxed the clay upward, but a hidden air pocket ballooned, tearing a notch along the rim. She halted, palms aching from the strain, and slid off the stool to re-wedge the lump on the wooden board. Kent waited, heel lifted, allowing the wheel to slow while the ladle rested in the basin once more. When Lyra returned, she timed her pulls between Kent’s firm presses, each exchanging the tool without words. Their forms ended shorter than planned, yet both stood upright. His bowl held a shallow glen along the inner curve, and her vase curved inward like folded cloth. The fading wheel vibration lingered against the soles of their shoes.
