He pinched the paper bag, and dry kernels rattled inside. Jude had promised to honor his own small challenge: entice a shy goldfinch to the feeder before the bag emptied. Clara, leafing through a field guide beside him, flipped a page with a soft flap. Below the feeder, sparrows chirped and cracked husks, their taps building a busy rhythm. Jude stood, three quick steps making the bench creak, and used a plastic spoon to push seed into the tray’s sheltered corner. A brisk gust hissed through the leaves, tried to obliterate his neat pile, and scattered half of it onto the ground with a sand-like rush.

He crouched, trying to reconcile the shrinking supply with the long minutes birds needed to trust silence again. Footsteps crunched along the gravel path; a jogger’s steady cadence surged, then faded, and every wing on the tree snapped open. The branches clattered with sudden flight. Jude exhaled and noticed a new problem: the bag’s seam had split, releasing a thin, steady drizzle of seed that pattered onto the bench. He grabbed the empty water dish, turned it on its edge, and slid it under the leak. The ceramic cup caught the falling kernels with a muted drumbeat, buying time. Holding both bag and dish, he tipped their contents into the feeder in one slow pour, the seeds landing with a soft, even hush. The platform filled just enough before the dish echoed hollow. As Jude eased back onto the seat, the branch above vibrated; a flash of yellow and black replaced the retreating sparrows.

A robin on the trunk below produced a sharp, single note and hopped toward the newly quiet ground scatter zone.

「剩下的飼料不多了。」裘德低聲說。
