English 原文
A lone green chalk stick had rolled to the ledge's verge, its rounded side rocking with each mild gust. Troy pinched it before it tipped, the fine grit scraping across his thumb. Shoulders angled toward the dry upper section under the canvas awning, he stretched his spine and swept a sloping line. The motion tugged a light ache along his side, yet the stroke held steady, arching like distant uplands. Below, damp patches darkened the lower half; droplets slipped straight down and left thin streaks. When the chalk touched that moist zone, the pigment thinned and broke apart. Dust collected on the ledge in tiny piles that wobbled under his sleeve. Near a puddle’s trembling reflection, a faint chalk circle had survived last night’s rain, though its meaning stayed unclear.
For a clean sweep, Troy reached for the felt eraser. Its fabric sagged with moisture from an earlier swipe across the lower board, but his wrist lifted it anyway. One steady pass removed stray marks across the uplands line; grey sludge pressed out of the cloth and dripped downward. The droplet slid over the pale circle below, smearing its outline into the damp surface like quicksand swallowing edges. He jerked back, elbow brushing the ledge; a stub of yellow chalk toppled, bounced, and splashed into a shallow puddle beside the hedge that bordered the pavement. The water clouded yellow, hinting at the tone he had missed — the circle was never a hill; it had been a quince drawn earlier. With the last intact yellow piece lost, his upper landscape now lacked the sunlit fields he had pictured.
He crouched, fingers sinking into the puddle’s thin chill as he fished for the broken stub. Half of it had softened, yet a firm segment remained. If he had let it dissolve completely, the quince would have stayed a ghost beneath murky streaks. Instead, he pressed the salvaged fragment against the smeared circle, turning his wrist to spread short strokes. Tiny grains clung to the wet board, leaving gold patches. The quince regained shape, though its skin now showed uneven ridges, and the sweep that cleared the uplands above carried a faint green haze where grey mud had dragged across. Balanced on his toes, he blew gently; the air tasted of mineral dust.
A soft hush lingered after his breath, and Troy tapped the remaining chalk stub against the ledge.
