English 原文
The thick hook marked "80" showed only a light outline of dust where a strip had once hung. Theo’s fingers searched the pegboard, skimmed past the empty space, and found a coarse roll tucked behind finer sheets. Sunshine of the summer solstice angled through the patio roof and warmed his forearms as he tore a length and fed it under the block held in the vice. A gray sparrow balanced on the gutter above, head tilting at each rasp. Every forward stroke pushed warm sawdust against his knuckles, but a hidden knot bulged just enough to snag the fresh grit; halfway along, the paper ripped and flopped loose, its rough edge brushing the rubber mat.
Theo replaced the torn strip, this time turning his wrist so the grit crossed the grain at a slight diagonal. The adjustment pressed the knot from a new direction. Outside, an older gardener swept curled shavings toward a pile; the slow, rhythmic arcs of the broom stirred a mild breeze that slipped under the patio. The moving air lifted the loose dust—fluid as dry sand—and set the stage for a small chain: powder drifted across the metal bench, sifted into the knot’s shallow trench, and dulled the fresh strip almost at once. A breeze-borne whiff of jasmine from a nearby pot mixed with the woody scent. Theo leaned harder, felt the vice jaw shift, and tightened it a quarter turn to halt the block’s slide, stopping the cascade before more dust could bury the surface. Honey tones shimmered where the coarse scratches thinned, yet faint ridges still crossed the face, warning him not to waste the last fine sheet. He raised the soft brush toward the cluttered corner, and fine particles spiralled upward across the bench while his wrist remained poised in mid-sweep.
