She bent closer and tried to decipher the smeared letters on two almost identical envelopes. Only the faint peppery hiss released when a seed was crushed hinted at basil over oregano. To confirm, she scooped a pinch into a shallow metal dish, planning to carry it toward the herb-drying hook for comparison. Garnet specks from beetroot seeds clinked inside another dish, marking her progress with crisp taps.

Sudden footsteps swished outside the shed, then a quick rap echoed through the open doorway. Bram, busy watering the beds, suddenly needed the hand trowel resting by the doorway threshold. Willa crossed the creaking floorboards and passed the tool through angled sunlight that rang against its metal blade. If she had returned immediately, the next chain of noises would have reached her ears sooner. Warm air pooled beneath the tin roof, and that rise met the waxy seam of the basil packet in sly synergy. The glue softened, the flap uncurled with a muted pop, and pale seeds pattered across the shelf. Willa stepped back inside just as the dish scraped toward the edge of the shelf. Her shoulders jerked, and she flicked her folded scarf from a peg, dropping its thick wool across the track of scattering seeds. The cloth absorbed the tiny impacts with soft thumps, slowing the drift before any packet could tumble farther. She gathered the mixed kernels, listening to their remaining trickle as they spiralled into a pocket formed by the scarf's bend. If she had returned a minute later, the tray would have smashed on the floor. The shelf that had been quiet now carried an irregular rhythm of loose seeds nudging the wood.
