English 原文
Mae slid a narrow sorting tray across the cool shelf beneath the window, its tin edge scraping softly while Vernon brushed spilled seeds into a blue-grey cone. A grey cat lounged on the ledge, tail flicking near a glass magnifier that both people would soon need. Dust floated in the pale beam, turning the air silver. Around their ankles the stone floor stayed cold, but heat pressed down from the tin roof. Mae opened a wrinkled envelope whose label had faded to blank cream; only the scent hinted at basil. Nearby lay another torn packet, once filled with orchid seed so fine it looked like smoke. A faint rustle rose whenever Vernon nudged the packets, like grass along a glade in a light breeze.
Both sets of seeds now lay mixed in a single wooden tray—the unintended reunion of herb and flower. Vernon reached for the magnifier, yet Mae’s hand arrived first; she had already lifted it to examine the round grains. He paused, then altered his plan. He had hoped to compare the basil against last year’s reference tray, but the only lens was occupied. Most reference boards had been mislabelled during the damp summer, so the brightness mattered. If the light grew any dimmer, he would lose every edge. He knelt nearer the window and tried to come up with another way. The cat tracked his movement, ears twitching. Mae, noticing his steady wait, angled the lens so a thin beam slid toward him; the transparency of an orchid coat became clear under that shared shimmer.
The cat suddenly stretched, hind paw brushing the magnifier. The lens rolled across the shelf, skimmed the rim of Vernon’s tray, and stopped beside a swollen seed twice the usual size. The slight impact cracked the moist coat, releasing a sharp oregano scent that drifted upward. Mae shifted posture to separate the look-alikes; Vernon pinched the broken seed as a quick reference, and the rest of the mix divided smoothly in minutes. While they slid the finished trays aside, a single orchid seed clung to the cat’s whisker, glimmering like a silver dot each time the animal blinked.
