English 原文
A finger-wide gap between two jasmine boxes exposed pale wood normally hidden behind closely stacked bundles. Dale bent closer, expecting a cedar packet to sit there, yet his fingertips met only cool, smooth shelf grain. Pearl, comparing ribbon colours near the wrapping counter, glanced over while he carefully prised the neighbouring packets aside for room. He wanted a cedar bundle for his uncle’s birthday and planned to slide it into the canvas satchel on his shoulder. Finding none there, he lifted a pale green roll smelling faintly of pine and laid it on the counter. To compare notes, he had already uncapped his small brass tin so lingering fragrances would not mingle inside.
Next, he picked a darker bundle wrapped in ridged paper, negotiated the crowded aisle, and placed it beside the first. The shopkeeper weighed both on the brass scale, yet the needle wavered instead of resting; the device had drifted off balance. A stone counterweight shaped like a badger was meant to zero the beam, but it no longer sat reliably in its notch. Hoping weight alone would distinguish scents, Dale added a third bundle from lower down, squeezing it between the other two plates. Pine, cypress, and sandalwood now swirled together; his nostrils blurred the flavours like colours mixed too long on a brush. He drew out a folded handkerchief, waved cool air across his face, and tried breathing through the clean cotton for a pause.
When the breeze from the doorway briefly cleared the haze, Dale slid away the middle, heavier packet and returned it to the shelf. With only two samples left, the scale still dipped, so he pressed the stone badger firmly; the beam levelled without quiver. A sliver of space opened behind the counterweight, exposing a slim, copper-labelled bundle tucked flat against the back rail. He lifted it; the surface felt gritty with resin dust, and the scent broke free—dry cedar bark, clean and unmistakable. Pearl’s eyes widened at the sudden clarity, while Dale slid the prized sticks into his waiting satchel. A faint line of resin powder remained on the beam beside the badger, catching amber light while new customers shuffled along the aisle.
