English 原文
Tobias tapped the half-folded pastry box; one corner kept lifting despite the crease. He slid along the packaging station’s steel counter, eager to finish the gift before steamy brioche reached the shelf. Overhead light struck the flat surface, throwing a sharp rectangle of glare against the quiet queue area. Warm air from the ovens continued to transform pale batter into glossy rounds behind the pass-through window. Tobias placed a printed tissue inside; its delicate framework of threads lined the base like an orderly net. Two lemon twists followed, shining under the lamp, and he added a second pad of paper to consolidate the layer. A brown sparrow hopped onto the outdoor bench, eyeing the crumbs that clung to Tobias’s sleeve each time he turned. The second tissue had been smoothed flat by quick sweeps of his palm, leaving no wrinkles to catch glaze.
Trying to keep pace, Tobias quickly slipped a cardboard divider between the pastries in search of extra stability. While tying a ribbon, he brushed the sleeve; a crumb slipped off the fabric and skittered across the tiled floor. The shop’s striped cat darted from beneath a stool, nose twitching, and pounced on the moving speck. Its sudden leap nudged the ribbon spool; the cylinder rolled, unwinding a bright trail that draped over Tobias’s wrist. The loose strip fluttered like a slow flag, brushing the paw of the same curious cat, which sprang back in alarm. That recoil bumped a drinking bowl set for the cat; water sloshed, and several paper stickers at the station curled upward. A kitchen apprentice wiped the spill, slowing the queue while customers shifted two tentative steps sideways.
Tobias tried folding the lid again, yet the cardboard resisted; the extra divider pushed the sides apart like a stubborn spring. He inhaled, pinched the divider’s edge, and steadily tugged it free in one clean move. The lid eased downward; ribbon relaxed, and droplets that had clung to the stickers rolled off and disappeared between shadowed tiles. With less inside, the pastries settled neatly, allowing their sugary scent to reinvigorate the small space around the packaging station. A baker who had nurtured the sourdough starter since dawn slid a fresh tray across the pass-through, nodding at the closed box. At the same hour behind the glass display, rising dough pressed upward, and a thin plume of steam drifted toward the ceiling.
