English 原文
Six sandwiches had cooled inside the wicker basket during the slow walk from the car. Now Iris knelt on the chequered blanket beside Trent, easing her knees onto the warmed squares with deliberate care. The overlapping stripes formed a shifting matrix of red and cream squares that dipped where a hidden ridge lifted the grass. An optimistic patch of blue opened overhead, and the mild sun warmed the fabric in the centre flat. Stones at the uphill corners and the basket itself anchored two exposed sides against the first curious breezes. A heavy thermos completed a loose support system that seemed firm enough for the moment. With space still generous, Iris lined up containers of fruit, pasta salad, and sliced vegetables along the centre flat. Trent balanced two paper plates near the wind-side edge where the blanket billowed most often.
Minutes later a stronger gust pressed against their backs and curled the unweighted fabric inward. It squeezed the available surface beneath their knees like a slowly closing painted garden door. The thermos rolled downhill along the buried ridge, nudged a container, and flipped its plastic lid open. Bright pasta spiralled out, bounced over several squares, and scattered across the cloth in a colourful trail. Iris lunged forward, her palms flattening the rippled fabric and pinning one fluttering corner to the grass. Still, several carrot sticks slipped to the damp grass and began a quiet downhill escape. A brisk round of garbage collection followed, signalled by sleeves pushing back and knees sliding over the checked fabric. They chased wrappers, lifted runaway cutlery, and brushed stray herbs into an empty plastic tub. When they regrouped, the blanket’s centre had shrunk to a narrow strip barely wide enough for the sandwiches and fruit. The salad went back into the basket, and the plates were stacked into one, conceding space rather than wrestling the restless wind.
Trent pushed the thermos firmly against the uphill stone and folded his legs close, making a smaller target for the next gust. Iris tucked the spare napkins under the fruit box, then lowered herself beside him, shoulders almost touching. The reduced menu looked neat along the surviving strip, each wrapper weighted by a pebble. They broke open one sandwich together, halves passing from hand to hand without plates today. Around them, grass blades swayed in uneven waves, and the basket lid rocked but stayed ajar. A shadow from the drifting tree-shade zone crossed their toes, and crumbs tumbled gently toward the downhill corner.
