English 原文
Cool vinyl clung to Reed’s forearm. A sharp chirp slipped beneath the chairs, and a thumb-sized frog the color of gentian petals gave a quick quiver on the linoleum. The ceiling vent hissed; ticket numbers beeped forward. Reed grabbed an empty medicine cup from the water dispenser, its rim ringing against the cooler’s metal tray, and lowered it toward the frog. The cup knocked the leg of a plastic chair instead, sending a hollow thud across the waiting room. Startled, the little creature sprang under the next row, and the cup skittered away, rolling until it tapped a wall and lay still.
Farther down the hallway, footsteps shuffled over linoleum while fluorescent panels buzzed overhead. Reed’s clipboard scraped against the form-filling table as he copied insurance numbers; the chained pen rattled in irregular rhythm. A dispenser coughed out a drizzle of sanitizer that began to solidify into tacky beads along the counter edge. Behind the pharmacy window, the label printer chirred, stalled, then rasped again when a technician tugged the curled paper free. A handheld translator on the desk repeated the technician’s short apology in three languages, each rendition rising in pitch like an electronic bird. If the printer had jammed a second time, the line behind Reed would have groaned, yet the sheet slid through cleanly and the queue inched forward.
When Reed stepped toward the pharmacy window, the nurse set a stack of pill cups beside the register; one rolled off, clinking toward his shoe. The same clear cup now carried a crescent smear of gentian-blue ink from the earlier form. Just then, the tiny frog slid from beneath the glass partition, its plastic belly scraping with a faint whine; a magnet clung to its underside, explaining the strange movement. Reed knelt, guided the spotted cup over the toy, and tilted it until the magnet clicked against the cup’s base. Reed guided the spotted cup toward the technician, and gentian-blue fingerprints streaked the rim where his grip had slipped earlier.
