Warm air from her palm melted the surface; a gentle hiss escaped when she lifted her hand. She had shaped eight firm spheres already, each thud against the growing dome measured by the ringing shovel leaned nearby. A shallow groove had been carved by earlier scoops, yet the candle jar still scraped the roof and refused to fit.

She tried a twig first; its tip produced only a screechy scratch that sprayed powder onto her boots. She then swapped to a wooden spoon saved from yesterday’s picnic basket and hoped the broader edge offered more finesse. Two careful turns removed a finger-thick curl of snow inside the hollow at its deepest point. The spoon warmed, dripped, and then froze again, sealing itself to the wall with a brittle crack. If she pulled harder now, the dome would tear into uneven shards that no fresh snow could hide. Instead, she fetched a mug of icy water from the garden tap near the fence. Each cold drop pattered inside and slowly glazed the stubborn rim into glassy smoothness within seconds. The candle jar slid at last, touching the floor of the hollow with a muted clink that echoed through the dome. Boris lifted it to the front step for lighting, while Lyra carved a witty grin on the spare snowball perched on top. A magpie on the cedar post tilted once, then swooped along the fence line, snow dust swirling in its wake.
