English 原文
Thea shoved the wooden pump handle beside the musk-ox lookout, releasing a puff of hay-sweet dust into the warm air. A metallic tang from the chute mixed with the earthy musk drifting over the tundra enclosure beyond the glass. She hoped to drop the handle far enough to release three frozen feed cubes, yet her weight alone left a hand-width gap. Gemma knelt, lifting a flat granite chip that smelled faintly of wet lichen, and slid it onto the handle’s raised end. The bar dipped one finger lower, but not enough. A second stone, coated in dusty clay that tasted chalky on drifting grit, brought the gap to two fingers.
Searching for one more weight, Thea grabbed her thick ring-binder packed with worksheet copies that carried a faint, inky bitterness. She balanced it on top of the stones; the smell of paper glue rose sharp, almost vinegar-like. The stack pressed down, the handle dropped with a muffled thud, and three pale cubes rushed along the chute. The first cube hit an empty woven hamper hanging below; the basket swung forward and struck the railing. That jolt nudged Thea’s open sketchbook, which slid off the ledge, bumped Gemma’s knee, and started to topple toward the damp gravel. If the pages landed there, wet grit would smear every charcoal drawing. Gemma darted a hand through the sour hay scent and caught the book, while Thea steadied the binder against her chest. Pages flapped between their grips as the empty hamper kept swinging in a slow circle above the still-dripping chute.
The musk ox, lured by the clatter, lumbered from its shaded shelter, a damp wool aroma drifting through the fence. Thick breath carrying grassy sweetness floated toward the girls, while the cubes continued to slide one after another into a shallow metal tray. Thea passed the first cube to a keeper arriving with tongs, then wiped chalky grit off her palms. Gemma placed the rescued sketchbook on the bench; its edges smelled faintly of damp paper but the charcoal lines stayed clear. They divided the remaining cubes, Thea tucking one beside the binder for a later drawing, Gemma holding the other near the rail so the musk ox could sniff it. Under their hands, two separate streams of musk-rich breath rolled over each cube and drifted onward across the path.
