English 原文
A tin casket the length of a hand threw a sharp gleam across the visitor pathway beside the fox enclosure. "Whose box is that?" a child asked behind Drake, but no one claimed it, so the small container remained on the sun-heated railing, its edges catching every flicker of light that slipped through the overhead leaves.
Drake lifted the casket. The lid refused to move; dried grit along the seam formed a tight grip. He set the box on the bench, unrolled a cloth sack of sketch pencils, and began outlining the shaded silhouette of the sleeping vixen inside the enclosure. A sudden chorus of macaw calls burst from the aviary down the path. Startled visitors shifted, and a gust pushed loose sheets from Drake’s lap. He chased the fluttering pages to the map kiosk, then paused as keepers wheeled crates past, blocking the route back. By the time the path cleared, clouds had slid over the sun, leaving the deck in softer, dimmer light. Returning to his spot, Drake noticed moisture beads along the casket’s hinge; the brief chill had loosened the dried grit. He pried the lid gently. Instead of coins or trinkets, the box held neat cubes of meat—tidbits clearly prepared for an animal that staff would normally interact with through the feeding tube. Drake had assumed the container was lost property; now it looked like misplaced equipment.
He gathered the cubes back into their corner, closed the lid, and carried the casket toward the rope queue at the staff zone, ready to hand it over. Inside the mesh, the vixen rose from her shaded patch, ears forward at the faint scent now drifting near the railing. A single cube had dropped during the transfer; the small morsel landed just inside the boundary wire. The vixen stepped out of the penumbra, nudged the fallen tidbit with her nose, and trotted into the deeper shadow beyond the log.
