English 原文
"Ribbon goes here," Vernon called.
Wren pivoted toward the wrapping bench, paper layers crackling like dry leaves under gentle pressure. She lifted the scarlet spool, and the metal chain holding the scissors gave a faint metallic ring. Her goal was simple: wrap a mixed bouquet before the cooler hum deepened into the store's closing song. However, the ribbon caught beneath the spool edge, producing a dry scrape that stopped her quick rhythm. She tugged once; the knot tightened, and the scissors' chain rattled against the bench in reply. Behind her, a spray nozzle hissed over the display buckets, marking the passing seconds with a soft rhythm.
While she searched for the loose end, Vernon saw water slosh from an overfilled bucket and drum onto the floor. Each drop struck the tiles with a hollow plop, then gathered into a spreading puddle beneath the wrapping tissue stack. The lowest sheets turned translucent, threatening to tear if she tried to wrap anything delicate on their damp surface. If Wren had kept tugging, the knot would have tightened and wasted even more of the limited ribbon. Instead, she grabbed a slim wooden stick used for staking orchids and slid it under the tangle to extract the trapped strand. The knot loosened with a muted sigh, but the wet tissue meant the original bouquet now risked drooping before delivery. A plush rabbit meant for children to cuddle swung from a peg, its silent bounce suggesting another idea.
Wren lifted a short glass vase nearby; a quiet clink came when she placed fresh floral foam inside. She trimmed nothing, leaving the florist's scissors untouched, yet the stems slid into the foam with quick, muffled pops. Loose blooms that would overflow the original bouquet now filled the vase, their colors pressed close like commuters in morning rain. Vernon tossed her a coil of raffia; its dry fibers brushed together, creating a soft rasp around the vase neck. He nodded when she tied the knot, and the shop's cooler resumed its low hum behind the closing glass door. A thin drip kept tapping the tiles, then faded into the broader murmur of compressors farther back.
