English 原文
Bare wood shone across the eastern halves of twelve bamboo culms; the opposite sides stayed glossy and green. The half-circles formed a tidy ladder of pale arcs along the gravel path like evenly spaced rungs. Orson slid a palm over one scraped ring, shoulder leaning forward, then rocked back to compare distances between rings. The tissue had been worn unusually smooth to a faint yellow, a sign of repeated contact at that height. A light breeze tilted the upper trunks, and a hollow drumroll rippled overhead, pressing faint vibration through his ribs. Hazel walked ahead, cradling a small aloe vera pot against her hip, boots crunching over the stones.
A stronger gust swept through the grove, bending several culms toward the narrow gravel path. One slender trunk bumped Hazel’s elbow, and the sudden jolt made her swivel sideways away. The pot slid from her fingers; Orson watched it plummet between two trunks, strike a scraped ring, and vanish into shadow. He bent, knees digging into the cool gravel, but his fingertips stopped a hand’s breadth short. Orson dragged a fallen stick around forty centimetres long, slid it downward, and scraped soft earth yet touched no pot. He split a dry sheath, lashed the pieces together with twine from his pocket, and gained another thirty centimetres. Even so, the pole still hovered just below the hidden rim of the trapped container.
Orson crouched lower, calves shaking as the slight downturn of ground toward the drain shifted his balance forward. A third strip of bamboo, roughly twenty centimetres long, went onto the pole, its joint flexing but holding. The added length caused a knock-on effect along the shaft, making the tip wag until he tightened his grip. He eased the pole under the pot’s rim, shoulders burning, elbows quivering against the narrow trunks. With a slow lift the container rose, brushed a bark edge, then landed safely on the gravel path. Fresh dust streaked the nearest culm exactly where the older rings stopped, revealing the pattern’s true source. At the same moment, Hazel knelt further along and caught a new scrape forming as another gust passed. Orson wiped the fine dust from the aloe vera leaves with one steady sweep of his thumb.
