A sharp metal clang rang across the narrow bank as Boris swung an adjustable wrench at the swollen sluice plank. Wren paused two paces behind him, the mud wall squeaking under her sandals and little ripples tapping against seedling stems. She had promised herself to lower her own gate before noon, yet the only wrench lay in Boris’s busy grip. Instead, she squatted, pressed both palms under the sun-warmed board, and heaved until the wood groaned and water hissed through. The plank, darkened by years of wet seasons, felt like an ancestor to the newer gates downstream. Halfway up, her heel slid on a wet patch; the sudden jolt rattled the toolbox leaning nearby against a cracked stake. Its lid flipped, the adjustable wrench bounced out, clanged once, and skittered into a small tin container of fish feed. Metal met metal; the container rang like a dull bell, toppled over the edge, and plopped into the ankle-deep pool.

The drifting tin grazed seedling rows, its rim sloshing water that bent the soft blades with each slow swing. Wren lunged forward, nearly losing balance, and grabbed the spiral holder of a smoking mosquito incense coil stuck in the bank. The thin wire hummed as she extended it, hooked the container’s rim, and steered the wobbling tin back toward dry ground. By then, Boris had freed his plank. He set the once-noisy wrench on the bank and walked toward his distant paddy. Wren slid the handle between her plank and the groove, wedging it until the rushing flow eased to a steady murmur. She lifted the coil back to its place; a thin wisp of smoke spiraled upward and faded. Along the groove, water kept humming softly through the narrow gap beside the wedged handle and slipped toward the lower terrace.

鐵罐漂過秧苗行，罐沿晃動的水花把柔軟的葉片一下一下壓彎。溫倫撲身向前，差點失去平衡，抓起插在田埂上的蚊香圈支架。細鐵絲在她伸直時嗡嗡作響，勾住罐緣，將晃動的鐵罐導回乾地。此時博里斯已經鬆開自己的閘板，默默把剛才吵鬧的扳手放在田埂上，走向遠處的田。溫倫把扳手柄塞入自己的閘板與槽縫間，固定後急流放緩，只剩均勻的潺潺聲。她把蚊香放回原處，一縷細煙盤旋上升後淡去。槽縫邊，水流持續在楔住的扳手旁輕輕嗡鳴，然後滑向下方的梯田。
