Seth stepped from drizzle into the shadow cast by the narrow awning, where the arc glowed cleanly against the deep surface. Below the shadow-edge, faint daylight reflected on damp slate, and chalk lines broke into pale streaks whenever the moisture gathered. The lower section had been dampened by the drizzle, so grey reflections shimmered where chalk usually clings. They planned a tall rocket spanning the board, with the left margin carrying exact measure marks for their science display. Joy offered the slim yellow chalk for the scale, while Seth claimed a longer white stick to outline the rocket’s body. A sudden push of breeze tilted rain outward, so droplets dotted the lower section before either could begin.

Seth raised the white chalk and, stretching past the shadow line, traced the rocket nose downward until dampness blurred the chalk halfway. He wiped the smear with a sleeve, then pressed harder, forcing the outline to hold even on the slick surface below. The firmer stroke fixed the rocket, yet friction shaved the white stick shorter and shorter, leaving only finger-length chalk when he finished. Joy now lacked enough clean chalk to draw the fine measure ladder beside the drawing. The remaining colored stubs rolled toward the edge, each wobble threatening to surrender into the puddle below. Their careful plan for precision had shifted; fixing the outline had consumed the very tool the scale required.

Joy crouched under the awning, fishing two blue stubs from the box beside the ledge. She held them out, and Seth chose to pitch in, steadying the pieces as improvised rulers. Together they pressed the stubs flat against the board, the quiet team effort marking every ten-centimetre step along the rocket’s flank. One stub surrendered under pressure and split, yet its broken edge still printed bold dashes where numbers later belonged. The wind shifted again, lifting a corner of the awning so sudden glare flooded the upper drawing and revealed a skewed midpoint. Without comment, Seth nudged the lower marks a shade right to match the new line. To balance the mismatch, they chose to rearrange the scale, spacing fewer marks farther apart along the edge. They stepped back; bright arcs met uneven dashes, and a puddled crescent mirrored the tilted shape.
