Steam from simmering quinoa carried a warm, nutty scent across the quiet lounge. Fern leaned beside the window, eager to pin the rainbow onto her sketchbook page. Soren balanced a stack of lilac toy blocks on the sill, hoping each band would mark its own brick. A narrow shaft of light had been framed by the closed curtain, and the glass sat exactly inside that glare. Both children reached for the cylinder at the same moment, their wrists almost brushing. The overlap made them pause, sparks of reflected light scattering across their faces. Outside timing, the refrigerator hum set a soft rhythm underneath the brighter beam.

Fern lifted the glass slightly, tilting it forward so the spectrum crawled lower, painting her page with dim violet first. Soren, now restless, nudged the base toward the opposite side, chasing a brighter fringe for his towers. Their careful dance disturbed the water, sending ripples that rocked the meniscus against the glass edge. Pinprick gleams scattered across pooled darkness on the sill, too messy for either project. Before they could correct it, a sudden cloud crossed the sun and dropped the room into even gloom. The rainbow faded to a faint ghost, leaving both children staring at an ordinary shadow-edge. The interruption cut their weekend lifestyle of window experiments short, at least until brightness returned.

Light slipped back when the cloud moved on, yet the angle now lay lower. Fern knelt, holding her paper flat on the boards where the broadened spectrum now glowed with clear red and bold green. Soren lay opposite, chin almost touching the pooled brightness, so the upper half of the band washed over his towers. They kept a quiet rhythm, sliding the glass a centimetre after every thirty heartbeats, exchanging space instead of words. A fresh bubble wandered upward, and that tiny lens broke the spectrum into flickering sparks that decorated them both like confetti. At last they left the glass untouched, their shoulders dropping as the drifting earth finished the show. On the sofa, the family cat rolled onto its back, one paw swiping through the dim band that slipped across the cushions. Its whiskers twitched while the faint color drifted along its belly and faded into the rug.
