English 原文
Flora scraped a coarse sheet along the clamped pine; a dull stripe stayed grey beneath the amber lamp. “Did the vice shift?” Silas tapped the jaw, puzzled by the uneven patch. The overhead luminary poured a honey glow over the bench, turning rising dust into tiny sparks. An adult, Lily, dabbed linseed oil on a finished stool at the shelf, then returned to her quiet task. Flora tightened the handle with a heroic tug; the metal gave a short clink, and she tried another series of long, even strokes. Each pass warmed the block, and resinous scent drifted around them like soft caramel. Yet the stripe remained, narrower but stubborn. The clamp had loosened twice already, so Silas wedged a folded scrap of sanding cloth between jaw and wood, hoping to keep the block square through the next grit-step. A number had been stamped beside each hanging strip, marking its grit.
Fresh paper rasped across the surface, and the stubborn stripe lightened until warm grain shone like a tiny prism catching sunlight. Then the folded cloth slipped; the block twitched, nudging a spherical off-cut kept near the tray for testing round edges. The bead rolled across the metal top, struck a standing brush, and bounced to the patio floor, seeming to dive toward the broom leaning nearby. Impact tilted the broom, whose wooden handle knocked a clear acrylic prism from the finishing shelf; color fragments scattered across the wall. Flora lunged first, but Silas’s foot reached the bead faster, blocking its path and halting the tumble chain. He steadied the broom before anything else could topple, and Lily’s brush paused in mid-air, then continued without comment. Together, the two friends lifted the block, brushed away the folded cloth, and slid it back between the jaws. Under renewed pressure, the block rotated by a hair inside the vice, fresh dust spiralling toward the tray.
