The clamp had loosened twice already, so Silas wedged a folded scrap of sanding cloth between jaw and wood, hoping to keep the block square through the next grit-step. Fresh paper rasped across the surface, and the stubborn stripe lightened until warm grain shone like a tiny prism catching sunlight. The bead rolled across the metal top, struck a standing brush, and bounced to the patio floor, seeming to dive toward the broom leaning nearby. Impact tilted the broom, whose wooden handle knocked a clear acrylic prism from the finishing shelf; color fragments scattered across the wall. Flora lunged first, but Silas’s foot reached the bead faster, blocking its path and halting the tumble chain. He steadied the broom before anything else could topple, and Lily’s brush paused in mid-air, then continued without comment.
