English 原文
Elsa tugged a flat grey stone from the gravel margin, its cool underside releasing grains that rattled onto her boot soles. York stood uphill, testing camera resolution while the shutter hummed. The cairn had been stacked by an unknown trailblazer, its top stone swaying whenever dry sage hissed. Pale rings of dried flecks circled lower stones, proof rain had once drenched them before today’s heat. Elsa knelt; gravel crackled under her knees as she lowered the new stone onto the fifth layer. When she lifted her palms away, a burst of air whistled round the bend and slapped the stack. The top stone clicked once, then clattered onto the second, which thumped against gravel with a dull thud. Pebbles skittered downhill, ringing lightly against the slope-face outcrop before rolling out of sight. She brushed her collar, now drenched with sweat, and heard the shortened column hum quietly at three stones.
She selected a thinner piece, edge sharp as slate, and spun it like a coin on the flat boulder. After two tidy turns, the stone slowed with a scraping sigh that promised good balance. She angled it atop the cairn, its narrow ridge pressed into a shallow hollow, hoping friction alone would hold. The stack whispered under the new weight, then stood straight like a lonely lightning rod against the open sky. Another gust burst through the scrub; dry leaves rattled, and the top layers drummed together in a fast pulse. Vibration nudged the base, the ridge slipped, and both upper stones wound up bouncing across the path, spraying noise. One rolling piece swept up loose pebbles; the growing cluster rattled downward until Elsa braced her boot against their course. Clinking fragments gathered at the leather, and a single rust-red pebble spun slowly inside a dusty hollow beside her boot.
