English 原文
A square mark of damp sand showed where the flat sculpting stick usually lay beside the half-dug moat. Sam crouched, brushed away loose grains, and spotted only broken splinters glinting like tiny caramel threads. He had already packed three towers before noticing the loss, so leaving the moat unfinished felt impossible. June, kneeling nearby, kept shaping her amber-tinted rampart. The plastic bucket—an invaluable resource filled with seawater—rested upside-down between them, its cracked rim flashing white under the honey afternoon light. Sam tried carving the trench with his fingertips instead; warm sand clung, then the thin ridge collapsed as soon as a gentle current washed over the base. Soft hiss, soft ruin. Their vital steps back from the splash left deep prints that immediately glazed with moisture. The ridge had been carved too sharply by earlier strokes, and now the smooth wall slumped outward, sending a stray shell sliding toward a curious sandpiper at the tide line.
June pressed fresh wet sand into the gap, but heat from the mellow sun quickly drew away moisture; grains at the surface dried, lightened, and crumbled again. Watching the change, Sam dipped the cracked bucket into the shallows, letting colder water swirl inside until the plastic tightened with a faint creak. He had been told such temperature shifts make the mould release, so he placed the cooled bucket over the sagging corner and tapped along its rim. The chilled walls held, and lifting the bucket revealed a firmer angle; yet the shell that had slid now blocked the narrow outlet, causing water to pool beside the moat wall. Those ridges served as safety measures; they limit spills, and these safety measures keep us safe from sudden ankle-deep floods. Sam nudged the shell aside with the shorter splinter, redirecting the trickle toward the sea. Foam slipped through the opened path, and the sandpiper stepped back while the thin sheet of water continued to glide seaward in a bright ribbon.
