English 原文
Tap, pause, tap—the perforated metal lid rocked against the porch stone in a neat, repeating beat. Out on the lawn, three fireflies flashed one after another, then began the sequence again, like tiny lanterns testing a count. Clyde knelt on the warm step, toes brushing cooling grass between stones, while the porch light threw a honey wedge beside him. The sweet aroma from the jasmine bush thickened each breath, and the blades still carried beads left by morning dew. Behind the screen door their father, a baker finishing his evening tea, hummed while cups rattled. Delia steadied the empty jar and watched the triple flashes repeat across the dim lawn.
Delia slipped a broad leaf into the jar to give the insects a floor; its green glowed beneath curved glass. The morning lesson on empathy had left the word ringing in Clyde's mind, and his hands moved with careful detail. Hoping for soft light, he sprinkled a pinch of jasmine petals inside, their orange edges sliding against the leaf. A second firefly drifted near, and Delia lifted the jar so the insect floated through the open lid. Wanting brighter company, Clyde guided a small clover head inside, yet the extra puff wedged against glass and pushed the petals upward. Twilight deepened; the lid refused to seat, and damp fingers slid while the third flash wandered toward the ivy shadows.
Inside, the two captured lights bumped leaf and clover like lamps in a crowded tent. Clyde paused; Delia balanced the jar, eyebrow raised at the rocking lid. He dipped two fingers, gripped the pinch of petals, and pulled the soft bundle free. The clover slid lower, the rim met its threads, and the metal tightened with a dry scrape that stayed silent afterward. They walked back toward the porch; the fireflies inside now blinked in unhurried pairs. Pale smears of pollen streaked the lid where the petals had rubbed. Delia pressed a thumb over one smear and slid the jar beneath the honeyed porch light.
