English 原文
The outermost chalk arc on the slate had faded to a pale mist, leaving a silver-grey gap beside the nine-o’clock hour line. Kit, shading the surface with the brim of a sun hat, leaned closer and compared the ghost marks that circled the iron gnomon: each curve bent a little farther left than the one before, like ribs of a shallow shell. A calm breeze brushed the notebook pages behind him and stirred tender hedge leaves, yet he kept his fingertips steady and let his arm stretch out across the cool slate. Sunshine lay over the garden in a pale sheet, turning the gnomon’s sunward side warm while its shaded edge remained frost-white. Chalk rasped as he drew a new line, but by the moment the stick lifted, the shadow tip already stood a chalk-width ahead, repeating the sliding gap he had just tried to erase.
Kit tapped the wooden protractor against the slate and slipped its arms around the latest arc. The loose brass hinge drifted open a hair, skewing the reading. If the hinge loosened again, the angle would drift even more. He broke a splinter from a spare chalk stick and wedged it between the plates; within seconds, the hinge had been tightened by the tiny wedge. The adjustment felt minor, but the next measurement aligned more cleanly with the ruler. When three corrected arcs overlapped, a pattern emerged: the leftward creep stayed constant, suggesting the gnomon itself leaned east. Moving the post was impossible today, yet the discovery meant every tracing needed a small offset. On a bench near the hedge, Vivian continued sketching iris petals, unaware of the silent investigation beside her. Kit lifted the eraser cloth, wiped the faded outer band, and checked the gap that had greeted him earlier. He pressed new chalk to slate and drew a sharper arc across the place that had been empty at the start.
