English 原文
A silver puddle spread under the front-load washer—had the cycle ended early or had the seal slipped again? Ruby stopped at the laundry-room doorway, the humid air fogging her glasses while fluorescent light flickered above the steel-grey machine. She had loaded two bath-mats earlier, but an unbalanced warning had been shown once. She wiped moisture away with a folded handkerchief, then pulled the latch; the door stayed locked. The display blinked "00" and fell dark. She needed a smooth spin before the rooftop line filled, yet the washer refused. An orange tabby from the corridor chose that moment to curl up on the cold folding table, its tail spread across a pile of still-damp shirts. Ruby grabbed one rough towel from a nearby basket, ready to feed the washer more weight and coax the sensor to relent.
Five minutes later, the latch eased and water drained, letting Ruby jam the rough towel inside, rolled tight against the mats. She restarted the spin; the washer swayed twice and stopped. One partial gain. If the load balanced now, she would still reach the roof before the late-afternoon wind arrived. She lifted a pair of heavy jeans from the table, drops ticking on the tiles, and rammed the bundle into the opposite side with a plastic scoop stored on the shelf. The drum turned longer—four measured rotations—before freezing again. Two gains, still unequal. A thicker towel waited in the communal basket. Ruby knotted one corner so it would not unfold and wedged it low under the mats. The instant the knot touched metal, the rim straightened, the red sensor blinked off, and the motor slid into a smooth hum, as if the washer reclaimed its post as a guardian spirit of the shared basement.
Ruby stacked damp shirts along the metal table. The tabby rose, stretched, and leaped onto the washer lid, drawn by the vibration. One stray paw brushed the buttons; the motor paused, then held its rhythm because the balanced weight refused to shift. Ruby breathed out and tugged the handkerchief from her pocket to wipe a bead of water from the panel. The caretaker—a quiet guardian of the corridor—passed the doorway, broom scratching softly on tile, and continued toward the stairwell. Overhead, the flickering tube chose that moment to glow evenly. Ruby drew the door closed; inside, the low hum of the balanced drum continued, faint but steady.
