Spilled Rain and the Tilted Gauge-

English 原文
Only three blank lines remained in the rain logbook, each bordered by expanding grey smudges from earlier drops.
Pearl balanced the damp book on the porch table, then eyed the glass gauge glowing honey-bright between bursts.
She stepped onto the first sandstone slab, its rough surface gripping her boots while slate ahead already shone like poured oil.
A brittle twig snapped under the next stride, sending a sharp sound across the beds and slowing her careful rhythm.
Despite the rub of rain against her hood, she crouched beside the cylinder and aligned her eyes with the lowest marking.
Wind lifted a branch overhead; heavy drips struck her shoulders, making her flinch and blur the number she mouthed silently.
Sudden creaking from the garden shed cut through the rain, as the door rattled open with a low wooden tremor.
Pearl straightened, wince visible across her brow when another hollow thud followed, louder than the earlier snap of twigs.
Leaving the gauge, she hurried over wet grass and pushed the door further, revealing the plastic funnel rolling against muddy boots.
Wind had driven it from a shelf, but nothing inside seemed broken, so she snagged the funnel and jogged back.
During those few heartbeats, rain deepened; water now curved above the rim of the cylinder, ready to spill onto the post.
The grandparent on the porch called a gentle remark about brighter sky, yet Pearl already knelt again, sleeves darkening fast.
She wedged the funnel with unexpected grace into the mouth, then tipped excess water into a tin cup marked for kitchen flour.
The cup's interior used ounces, so she traced conversions in the air, pausing whenever cold drops tapped her eyelashes.
If the next pause lasted thirty breaths, she would finish before slate stones glossed again with sliding water.
Graphite had grown soft, yet the figures formed wider strokes that stayed readable across damp fibres of the page.
When she closed the logbook, grey fans spread from the fresh numbers, matching smears left earlier by her slipping boots.
Across the porch table, those wet half-circles joined the older graphite blots, a layered record of every hurried measurement.
