Moss Over the Half-Seen Circle-

English 原文
"See the arrow plate?" Reed asked.
Clara shifted her weight, pine needles compressing under her boots while the narrow pine corridor dimmed around them.
They stood where two paths forked like prongs of a tuning fork. Element A lay in Clara’s palm: a compass whose face carried a tiny bubble that nudged the needle off true north on every slope. Element B clung to the tilted marker post: a circle half-hidden under lichen. Clara had already compared the ridge bearing with the trail map earlier, so correcting the compass mattered first. She waited, wrist steady, until the bubble glided toward the centre; that perfect instant lasted a heartbeat. To keep balance she braced a thumb on the post, and loose bark shifted. Moss fell in a flustered little heap and buried the circle’s lower edge, turning the once-clear symbol into a blur of green threads.
Now the compass reading was crisp, yet the plate had become useless. Clara knelt, feeling tension climb along her calves. A faint breeze rattled dry needles overhead, and a robin’s knock echoed from the birch stand beyond. Accepting that she could not fix both objects perfectly, she slid a flat twig between moss and wood, lifting the growth just enough to expose half the circle. The compass, meanwhile, hung from a cord and tilted a quantum of a degree as it swung. The nautical star at its centre distorted ever so slightly under the scratched plastic, but the bearing still pointed roughly east. Reed leaned closer, examining the compromise without comment; his boots tapped once on the boardwalk planks that began a few steps ahead.
Clara rose, shoulders tight then loosening, and chose the right-hand path where soft gravel replaced needles. Reed followed, their footfalls alternating in an easy rhythm toward the distant clearing. The twig eased out of its gap, and moss slowly draped across the arrow once more.
