Thin twigs continued to sail through the narrowing channel, bumping her knuckles before spinning away like small canoes. A rosette of foam curled where stone met stone, marking the progress better than any ruler. She had planned to seal the arm-span gap before creeping shadows cooled the water, and many steady pieces still waited nearby.

As the pile thinned, only wedge-shaped pieces remained, and each one caught the faster current then rolled sideways. Rosa pressed down hard, palms whitening, yet the water lifted the slab twice before silt clouded around her wrists.
