Three flat pebbles already lined one flank of the fallen bamboo bridge, and three more waited in Rafael’s palm while a shallow ditch yawned below the culm. He had tapped the smooth surface with his knuckle, listening for a deep note that Drake, his older brother, hoped to record in a notebook balanced against one knee. Each strike sent a hollow thud through the trunk, yet the pitch drifted because the culm rolled a finger’s width on its own dry sheath supports. Above them, a sudden gust rattled the dense culm cluster; overlapping knocks rose in an asymmetrical rhythm that tried to muffle Rafael’s target tone. He bent lower, ear nearly touching the bamboo, refusing to surrender the experiment until the right resonance emerged.

Another, stronger burst burst peeled a page from Drake’s notebook and whisked it down the gravel path. Rafael darted after the sheet, boots crunching through shifting light stripes while Drake grabbed the rest. By the time Rafael returned, breathing hard, the grove had quieted again. A green leaf, torn loose by the wind, now lodged itself in a shallow groove beneath the culm. When he drummed his knuckle, the note deepened, softer but steadier, its vibration carried through the ditch like a distant drum under water. The material had changed during his brief chase, and so had the task.

Accepting the new tone, Rafael adjusted his stance along the bridge, choosing a spot between the second and third pebble where the altered timber spoke most clearly. He paused until the canopy fell silent, then struck once more; the culm answered with a firm, rounded boom that matched Drake’s quiet whistle of approval. The row of stones that had marked only half the span at the start now stretched the full length, and the fresh leaf still quivered inside the narrow groove.

拉斐爾順應新音，用身體挪到橋上第二與第三顆石頭之間，這裡能最清晰地聽到變化後的木質聲。他等到樹冠完全靜止，再敲一次；竹幹回以圓潤而堅實的轟鳴，德瑞克低低吹了聲口哨示意認可。開頭只標出半段的那排石頭如今延伸到整根竹幹，而那片新卡入的葉子仍在狹窄槽內輕微顫動。
