"See this dent," Cora called.

Axel crouched, sliding a fingertip along a frost-white scratch that curved across the bamboo culm beside the path. Silver stripes of light drifted across the gravel, shifting each time wind lifted the blue-grey canopy overhead. A bluish haze hung between culms, and occasional droplets slid from glossy leaves, landing on the gravel with pinpoint flashes. Their friend Greta stood near the fallen culm bridge, notebook open, listening for new tones between gusts. Cora’s palm pressed the dent; a low thud answered, different from the usual tok-tok of swaying trunks. She eyed the bridge; the damaged culm might yet respond in the same curious way.

She laid a thin branch across the hollow bridge to test its voice while a calm moment aligned the surrounding trunks. The branch produced a muted rumble, so she added a wrist-thick pebble, hoping the extra weight would deepen the note. A second, even heavier stone followed, and the bridge sagged; its voice dulled like a drum filled with damp cloth. Cora paused for evaluation, tapping again, yet the sound bloomed sluggish and flat, as though the culm protested excess weight. Each strike became dull testimony that more had become less than useful for the hollow tube. Axel rubbed his knuckles, cool dust clinging, while bamboo overhead hissed in another blue-grey gust.

When the wind calmed again, she knelt, slid out the middle pebble, and let it drop onto the pale gravel. Without the extra mass, the bridge rose slightly, aligning its hollow core with open air beneath. A clear, steel-grey bass tone marked the culmination of the small experiment, rolling through the cluster and carrying to the sunlit clearing. The note seemed to validate the whole trial, deeper yet brighter than before to them. Her fingers opened; no stones remained to add or remove, yet the bridge now hummed on its own. She brushed dust off the culm’s silver skin, listening to the steady vibration against her knuckles.

風再度歇息時，她跪下，抽掉中間那顆石子，讓它落在蒼白碎石上。失去多餘重量，竹橋微微抬起，中空的核心與下方空氣重新對齊。一道清晰的鋼灰低音宣告這場小實驗的圓滿，穿過竹群傳到陽光灑落的空隙。那聲音似乎充分驗證整個過程，比先前更深卻也更亮。她攤開手指，已無石頭可加可減，竹橋卻自顧自地嗡鳴。她把竹桿銀色的表皮拍掉灰塵，聽著穩定的振動貼在指節上。
